Hotcakes Gallery opened in February of 2004 with the mission of providing
Milwaukeeans an unintimidating venue to engage contemporary fine art.
From original works of art sold for eight quarters out of one of Hotcakes'
vending machines, to the art on the walls of the gallery, Hotcakes focuses
on showing affordable art created by emerging and mid-career artists.
By building a bridge between artists and a large untapped audience that
feel the arts are inaccessible, many people are starting their art collections
with a visit to Hotcakes Gallery.
In May of 2000, after studying at the Bauhaus Universitat in Weimar,
Germany and graduating with an M.F.A. from the Milwaukee Institute of
Art & Design, Gallery Director, Mike Brenner formed the Milwaukee
Artist Resource Network (MARN). Ever since, Brenner has been trying to
find ways to enrich the lives of artists in Milwaukee and bridge the
gap between patron and creator. Hotcakes is a natural extension of what
Brenner has been doing for the past 4 years with MARN, and the gallery
is quickly becoming the space where local artists and artists from around
the country are showing together, collaborating and building relationships
to further each others' careers.
For the 2004 Stray Show, Hotcakes is featuring works by Lara DaCosta
(New Bedford), Jeremiah Ketner (Chicago), Gerard Kilgallon (Chicago),
Kathryn Martin (Milwaukee) and Jessica Robbins (Los Angeles).
